The Month of April Brings Easter
Why do we have eggs and bunnies at Easter?

The month of April brings the celebration of Easter, a time when it is believed in the bible that Jesus rose from his tomb on the third day after crucifixion and thereby created the foundation for Christian faith.
But what does this have to do with eggs and the Easter bunny?
Many of us enjoy munching our way through chocolate eggs at Easter. However, traditionally the week leading up to Easter was known as Holy week, and eating real eggs was not allowed by church leaders during this period.
Therefore, any eggs laid that week were saved and decorated to make Holy Week eggs, that were then given to children as gifts.
Later on the tradition was adapted by Victorians who made cardboard eggs, wrapped them with satin and filled them with Easter gifts.
The first chocolate eggs appeared in France and Germany in the 19th Century. They weren’t made of the chocolate we know today as they were bitter and hard, but as chocolate making developed, hollow milk chocolate eggs like the ones we enjoy today became popular.

Around the same time the Victorians were popularising eggs as gifts, the popularity of the Easter Bunny was also growing.
Because rabbits give birth to large litters of babies around this time of year, it was seen as a symbol of rebirth and new life.
Legend has it the Easter Bunny decorates and hides newly laid eggs, (which is also as a symbol of new life), and this is how the tradition of hunting for hidden eggs has come about that children enjoy so much.
However, the Easter bunny can’t take all the credit. In parts of Germany Easter eggs are delivered by a fox, and in Switzerland it’s the Cuckoo who does all the work.
Personally, I think the Easter bunny wins it hands down!
